Welcome to Sigtuna - where Sweden begins!

Sweden's first town was built as a political and religious center of power over 1000 years ago. Around 970 AD, King Erik the Victorious declared the town to be built to form a new kingdom, ruled by one God and one King. Some years later his son, Olof Skötkonung, minted the first coin here the year 995. His daughter Ingegerd then married the Emperor Jaroslav from Kiev and later on she became the first female saint from Sweden in Ukraine with the name Saint Anna.

No other place in the world is as rich in runic stones as Sigtuna. It is hard to say exactly how many there are but the guess is somewhere around 15 and 25 runic stones and that is only in the small town area.

You will also find here ruins after three medieval stone churches and the Church of St. Mary, built during the 13th century and still in use, is the oldest brick building in the Mälaren Valley.
